Sculptures and art projects about invented creatures and laughing at beauty standards: Wim De Prez’s sculptures originated from his painting of bizarre creatures. They ‘walked out’ of the paintings. The sculptures and the creatures in the paintings raise questions about our standard of beauty. They don’t want to be accepted as good looking, but could make you laugh anyway.
Wim De Prez uses his unique visual language to bring to life creatures on the canvas, stemming from his imagination. The abstract works are often unrecognizable and difficult to comprehend. The abstract forms of his first exhibitions later crystallize into figures, creatures and beasts that are recognizable and accessible. Humour is never far away. Wim De Prez creates a universe of fantastic creatures, which are a cross between toys, candy and the demons of Hieronymus Bosch.
In 1993 Wim De Prez started painting from trompe l’oeil-murals to art on demand. Today he makes 3D art, paintings and installations.
‘Before I start making an artwork, I thoroughly try to detect your question. We talk about a personal or business or any other story, size, place of the work, etc.. After I give you an idea about a budget, we can go ahead. Before you decide, you know what you get.’
Wim De Prez started his artistic career with murals and trompe l’oeils. Since 1993 he has been creating art in people’s homes, in businesses and in public places. From classical landscapes to more out there experiments, Wim De Prez has pushed his limits to make his clients’ dreams into reality.
