A sensory wall for kids
Levensvreugde Verblijven vzw asked Wim De Prez to create an art project on the playground of the department MFC De Coen. The mission for this project was to make art accessible to children with mental disabilities.
Levensvreugde Verblijven vzw
The MFC The Coen within theLevensvreugde Verblijven vzw (Joy of Living Accommodation association) children from 2.5 to 21 years are attended to. These children have moderate to severe mental disabilities, often with additional problems such as behavioral and emotional disorders and autism. But that does not mean they can not enjoy art. With this project, the association wanted to react against the typical ‘do not touch’ signs you’ll find in museums and create an artwork that invites touch. The work had to be a visual but also tactile experience for the children.
Working together with the client, we created a three-part work of art. First, there are three mirrors that bring the child inside the art. The most important part of the piece is the tactile wall itself. The funny figure invites the child to touch it. The relief of the creature encourages exploration. Finally, there are two creatures that complete the piece.
The result
The artpiece was installed on the playground. The kids can now enjoy the artful characters, with their eyes and their hands!
