Chuck Family

Des sculptures drôles

Sculptures and art projects about invented creatures and laughing at beauty standards: wim de prez’s sculptures originated from his painting of bizarre creatures. They ‘walked out’ of the paintings. The sculptures and the creatures in the paintings raise questions about our standard of beauty. They don’t want to be accepted as good looking, but could make you laugh anyway.

The creatures in the Chuck Family are created with 3D-software: Zbrush. Once the sculpture is ready, it is sent to a 3D printer. The sculpture is printed in a plastic material.  The sculpture has then to be sanded, smoothed with a few layers of spray filler, sanded again, and finished with primer and paint. Both synthetic and acrylic paints are used.

The larger sculptures are milled in polyurethane, assembled, sanded and then sprayed and painted with a mix of polyester and glassfiber. It makes them very strong and suitable to put outside. The two-component paints last very long in any environment. The small sculptures are not reinforced with glassfibre. In ‘The making of Omair’you can see how I work..

The paintings are mostly on canvas, painted and designed with acrylic paint, pastel, markers. They last as long as any other painting with oilpaint e.g. As I always paint the sides of the canvas, my painting don’t really need a frame.
